Previous Projects

Here are some of the other projects we've rolled out.

Ignite

In partnership with Smallpetitklein dance company we undertook a year long project to offer boys and young men across Scotland a range of inspiring dance experiences.

We rolled out a programme of free dance sessions and workshops in Aberdeenshire, Angus, Dundee, Fife, Glasgow and Perth & Kinross building local dance groups for boys in these areas.

´Ignite has allowed this group of boys to flourish and challenged a stereotype/gender barrier.´ IGNITE PROJECT PARTNER

The boys involved worked with a number of different tutors, tried out some new dance styles and created some new numbers which they performed for each other at an informal sharing at the end of each day.

Andy Howitt (YDance Artistic Director) and Thomas Small (SPK Artistic Director) both created a new dance work for a cast of 5 male performers which toured to venues across Scotland.

AB Crew

With funding from Talisman Energy and Arts & Business Scotland one of our Breakdance specialists led a 10 week programme of sessions across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire offering boys aged 10 to 18 the chance to get Breakdancing and join the AB Crew. At the end of the project the groups came together to showcase their new skills at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen (Tuesday 24 November 2009).

Forward Moves

Forward Moves (South Lanarkshire) was launched in Summer 2002 and was designed to encourage team work, provide a sense of achievement, and build self esteem in young people. It also focused on developing skills to improve their chances of successful employment in adulthood.

Produced in association with South Lanarkshire Council, Careers Scotland and funded through the New Opportunities Fund.

Girls in Sport

Girls in Sport (South Lanarkshire) began in Autumn 2003 and ran for three years. It was created to encourage teenage girls to stay active through dance as an alternative to 'traditional' sports like netball and hockey.

In association with South Lanarkshire Leisure and funded by the New Opportunities Fund.

Just Boys

Just Boys (West Dunbartonshire - 2004) was a similar project to Girls in Sport but aimed at teenaged boys particularly those in danger of exclusion from school or with behavioural issues. The main aim was to get boys focussed and working as a team and inspire them to find other things to do than watching TV and playing the computer.

Active Steps

Active Steps ran from 2003 to 2006 and covered a wide variety of areas including out of school hours learning activities, working with young people who are in danger of being excluded from school and also general dance workshops.

In association with Fife Council and funded by the New Opportunities Fund.

Club Asylum

Club Asylum (West Dunbartonshire) took place in Spring 2004 and involved working with local children in areas where asylum seekers have been integrated into the community. The group worked on dance projects which explored cultural identity.
